Saskatchewan Provincial Head Coach - Wheelchair Basketball
Job Description
(One Year Term Contract)

Saskatchewan Wheelchair Sports Association (SWSA) is a not-for profit organization dedicated to developing and supporting opportunities for all of our members to participate in the Association’s sport, recreation, and leisure time activities to the best of their abilities.

Under the supervision of the Executive Director and the Board of Directors, the successful candidate will have an increased responsibility for enhancing the growth and development of the Wheelchair Basketball Programs in Saskatchewan.

The role of the coach is to increase the number of high performance wheelchair basketball athletes, coaches, classifiers, and officials in Saskatchewan.

The goals of the coach are:
1. To improve Saskatchewan’s performance at National competitions (including Regional Junior Championships and Canada Games).
2. To increase the number of Saskatchewan athletes and coaches representing Canada at international competitions, including the Olympic and Paralympic games.
3. To play a leadership role in developing coaches in Saskatchewan, becoming a “coach of coaches”.
4. To work collectively with all partners to find creative and meaningful ways to make coach employment a long term sustainable option for Saskatchewan.

The applicant should have the following skills and knowledge:
• Degree/diploma in recreation, sports administration or related discipline
• Must have a minimum Level 2 Certification in the NCCP, working towards Level 3
• Must have a minimum of three years experience coaching wheelchair basketball at a high performance level
• Have the ability to work within a volunteer association as a staff member.
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational and supervisory skills
• Leadership, initiative and passion for sport
• Ability to represent the organization in a positive and proactive manner
• Knowledge of wheelchair sport and not-for-profit sport sector
• Must have a valid Class 5 drivers licence and a reliable vehicle.
• Willingness to travel and to work weekends

Duties and responsibilities of the Canada Games Coach:
1. With the Executive Director and the Provincial Coordinator, plan and prepare the SWSA Canada Games Funding application and support documents for presentation to the SWSA Board of Directors for their approval.
2. Be responsible for implementing the SWSA Canada Games Funding Assistance Program.
3. Work closely with volunteers and mentor future coaches in talent identification, testing, and training to achieve Canada Games program goals.
4. Design, implement, coordinate, and the monitor SWSA High Performance wheelchair basketball programs in the province.
5. Develop and implement a grass roots wheelchair basketball program in all age groups throughout the province.
6. Maintain accurate reports on all related programs, clinics and competition results to meet SWSA and Sask Sport reporting requirements.
7. Ensure that proper testing and evaluation is performed with athletes at all provincial levels.
8. Organize Sport Medicine and Science sessions that will facilitate the wheelchair basketball athlete’s physical, mental, nutritional, and medical needs for athlete development and competitive success.
9. Organize coaching clinics on a regular and progressive basis to ensure that all future wheelchair basketball coaches have competed NCCP training meet their needs.
10. Seek other funding opportunities and sponsorships
11. Maintain liaison with all relevant sport governing bodies and associations on technical matters. This includes communication with SWSA staff, Sask Sport staff, Saskatchewan Sports Medicine and Science Council, Zone Coordinators, Basketball Saskatchewan, and Canadian Wheelchair Basketball Association.
12. Work with the Executive Director to ensure that SWSA participation in all provincial, national, and international events is well planned and implemented.
13. Travel within the province to carry out the responsibilities necessary to facilitate athlete development through clinics and training camps.
14. Attend SWSA Board meetings as deemed applicable to report on plans and progress in areas that concern their job responsibilities. This will include responsibility for presentation of formal written progress reports.

 

 

Salary
The salary will be commensurate with experience.
This is a full time, one year contract position with the possibility of renewal.
